Makkah (Mecca in English) and Medina are 2 of the holiest sites in Islam and a place for Muslim's pilgirimage .
Kaabah was first built by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and Prophet Ishmael in Makkah . It is the point where all Muslims faces every time they pray.
Allah (God) commanded Prophet Ibrahim to leave his Egyptian wife and son, Hagar and Ishmael in the desert of Makkah. Due to the scorching heat, Hagar and son felt the desperate need for water and she walked back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwa 7 times.
Meanwhile his son Ishmael cried out of thirst and with Allah's blessing water sprang forth when Jibreel (Gabriel) struck the earth with his wing (Saheeh al-Bukhaari, 3364).* Today the well is the source of water for all the pilgrims to Makkah and called ZamZam well. It contains high amount of minerals.

ZamZam water is very special and used for many purposes as recorded below:
1) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Verily, it is blessed, it is food that nourishes." (Narrated by Imaam Muslim, 2473)
2) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Verily, it is blessed, it is food that nourishes and a healing for sickness." This was narrated by al-Bazzaar (1171, 1172) and al-Tabaraani in al-Sagheer (295)
3) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said“The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.” (Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 3062)
One is supposed to make a wish (those which is permitted in Islam) before drinking it
* Another version said Allah blessed the spot where Ishmael feet kicked the ground with Zamzam water.
