ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteI was interested to see these hand washing pitchers and bowls from many different cultures. In Europe I believe that pitcher and bowl sets were widely used for washing before most houses had plumbed water supply to sinks. Nowadays Europeans wash hands in a wash basin with soap an water before eating, so the Pitcher and Basin is an antique.
You are right we Jews also do a ritual wash of hands before and after meals (washing before any meal with bread is a widespread practice and must be poured from a receptacle - washing the fingers after a meal is an ancient Jewish custom that is still practiced in some circles - the reason given being to wash off salts that might be dangerous if you got them in your eyes).
